your friendly country bunkhouse in Monmouthshire
Garn-y-Skirrid is a newly built eco-friendly 4 person bunkhouse on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, just 3 miles from Abergavenny, with outstanding views of the Skirrid and Blorenge mountains. A warm welcome is extended to all guests by the owners, Tom and Marjorie Bennett, who live next to the property and who are happy to provide local information. The bunkhouse is designed for people who wish to take advantage of the many local historical and natural attractions as well as the superb walks and cycle routes that exist in this area. We are so new we have not yet had a grading visit from the Welsh Tourist Board, but we're sure you'll love your stay with us.
The bunkhouse is ideal for a small group of friends or a family as it sleeps four people in two bunk-beds. It is suitable for all seasons of the year as it is double glazed and the roof, walls and floor are all insulated (electric heating is included). Linen is provided: duvet with cover, two pillows and a towel for each person. There is a shower room with a full sized shower plus wash basin and toilet. There is also a small kitchenette equipped with a sink, fridge, two electric hot plates, microwave, electric kettle and toaster together with ample plates, cutlery and utensils. A welcome pack of tea, coffee and sugar is provided and basic groceries (fresh milk, bread, cereal etc.) can be ordered in advance. If our hens are co-operative there will be eggs from our own poultry! There is a dining table with chairs/bench and a picnic bench outside on the lawn should the weather permit eating al fresco.
Walkers and cyclists are welcome and there is a shed with padlock for storing bicycles overnight. A decked area runs along the front of the building and provides a pleasant place to sit out especially in the summer evenings when bats appear and perform 'batrobatics' for your entertainment. A bat detector can be borrowed from the owners so that you can listen to the bats calling to each other. It is also an excellent spot for watching birds as red kites, buzzards, curlews etc. are regularly seen and there is a bird-box fitted with a camera if the blue tits choose to co-operate! Wet clothes can be dried outside on the washing line under the veranda roof and wet jackets can be dried in the owners' boiler room if necessary. There is parking for two vehicles. Pets are allowed by prior arrangement. Free wi-fi is available, though like many rural areas the broadband speed is not as fast as one might wish.
